Во времена англосаксов a moot называлось собрание уважаемых граждан, на котором решались сложные вопросы местного управления, и к началу Средневековья оно приобрело значение «дискуссия». Это слово перекочевало в юридические круги и стало также обозначать дебаты среди студентов-юристов, на которых интересные юридические вопросы обсуждались и освещались как гипотетические случаи из практики. Такие собрания всё ещё существуют на университетских юридических факультетах.
